Volunteering for TCS NYC Marathon

Prestige and Selectivity

  • World Marathon Majors organized medical team w/ 1,500 medical professionals yearly

  • spots fill up especially at central park or finish line

  • Applications fill early and orientation attendance is mandatory

Why It’s Coveted

  • unique clinical / community experience from mild cramps to collapse or hypothermia

  • Medical students / residents / nurses / EMTs - great networking oportunity (NYP, Mount Sinai, NYU)

  • Emotionally rewarding to help runners from around the world

  • part of race day history

Competition and Requirements

  • Credentialed positions (MD/DO, RN, PA, EMT, etc.) go fast and are assigned based on your license or level of training.

  • Non-licensed volunteers (students, aides) can still help with triage, logistics, or first aid, but those roles are more limited and sometimes less hands-on.

  • Missing the orientation usually forfeits your spot

Career and CV Value

  • It’s often listed under “Volunteer Clinical Experience” or “Community Medicine” in CVs.

  • Interviewers (especially for residency or fellowships) recognize NYRR medical volunteering as a real-world, acute care experience showing teamwork, triage under pressure, and service mindset.
